One common reason for a hard drive to apparently fail is if you allow the drive to become completely full. Weird messages start being shown on the screen, indexing goes out of the windows (literally), you cannot save anything and the whole thing looks disastrous. I reloaded my operating system and thought I’d lost all of my bookmarks, sessions, address book and e-mail messages, all of which were important to me. Fortunately I know my way around computers and was able to recover everything, but the average person would need to get hold of a data recovery company. The one moral that I learned was – never let your hard drive get full up! It is easy to see how much space is left on a hard drive. Simply go to My Computer and right click on a drive then open properties, and you’ll get a graphical display that tells you how much of the drive is used. If you have a drive that is anywhere close to 80 – 90% full, it’s time to start deleting files or getting a larger hard drive. A quick call to a data recovery company and they’ll tell you the best path to take.
I told this true story to show just how easy it is to become negligent with a computer. Any data recovery company will tell you how important it is to make backups. I hadn’t backed up my address book or e-mail messages and it would have made my job a lot easier if I had done so. Be vigilant, especially when you’ve had a computer a long time and you don’t know how much space you have left on your hard drive.
