Data recovery
There are three main types of data recovery that we may be called upon to deal with. The most common kind involves an operating system failure where the object is to copy all of the wanted files onto another disk. This typically occurs on a single disk, single partition and single operating system data loss. Data recovery in such circumstances may easily be achieved by bootinmg up with a live CD, which will enable the operator to:
- Mount the system drive
- Mount and backup other disk or media drives
- Move files from the failed disk to an optical CD
This kind of data loss can be minimized by disk partitioning and moving data files to a different partition from the partition carrying the operating system files.
The second type of data loss involves a failure at disk-level such as a compromised file system, disk partition, or a hard disk failure. In each of these cases it may be difficult or not possible to read data. Depending on the circumstance, answers involve repairing the file system, partition, or using hard disk data recovery techniques ranging from software-based recovery of corrupted data to hardware replacement on a physically damaged disk. The indications in this case are of the permanent failure of the disk, and data recovery means just enough repair for a one-time recovery of files.
A third type of data recovery involves the process of retrieving files that have been deleted from storage media. Although there is some confusion regarding the term, it may also be used to refer
the forensic retrieval of data from a disk or other storage device.
