Scratched DVDs
While digital video discs (DVDs) are extremely hardwearing, it’s nearly impossible to prevent scratches from happening occasionally. Damage resulting from scratched DVDs can mean that you lose some of your favourite movie, or worse still an part of an important home movie such as your precious wedding DVD that cannot be replaced. It is often possible to recover the data from scratched DVDs and there are a few things that you can try for yourself.
Try washing scratched DVDs in warm water with a little mild detergent. Rinse it and shake off the excess water then allow it to dry in the air (never in the Sun). Try playing it. It the problem is still there, try playing it on a different player – sometimes this may work. If you do get it to play, burn a copy of the disc onto a new DVD. It may be possible to recover and rewrite the scratched DVDs by using a program such as DVDFab, Nero 8 or Isobuster. Programs such as these can often read through a lot of surface errors because of their superior algorithms, so it’s always worth trying to see if you can burn a good copy with one. Another way is to go online and buy an expensive DVD scratch repair kit. Yet another way is to try to remove the scratches by gently polishing the plastic surface of the DVD and then trying a burning program again.
