Water damage to your hard drive
Water damage to a hard drive is not at all an uncommon problem. It can be associated with natural disasters, burst pipes and even office fire systems. Whatever the specific cause, it's worth noting that water damaged hard drives are encountered regularly and can be fixed. Even if computer media has been under water and even if other components of a submerged computer system are a total loss, data recovery from water damage to a hard drive is still possible. If you do happen to fall into this type of situation there are certain things that you should remember.
- Leave the computer turned off. Do not attempt to turn the system on or boot up. Turning on a damaged system will cause further damage, making a data recovery attempt more difficult and at times impossible.
- Remove the hard drive from the tower and place it in an air-tight ziplock type plastic bag,. If the drive is wet do not leave it out in the air to dry. Do not attempt to dry or clean the drive in any way. If it happens to be covered in mud, rinse it off and wrap it in a moist paper before putting in into the plastic bag. Allowing the drive to dry out may cause additional damage, which may make the recovery more difficult, if not impossible.
- Never try to open up the hard drive
