Data Recovery
When data have been physically overwritten on a hard disk it is generally assumed that recovery the previous data is no longer possible. In 1996, Peter Gutmann, a respected computer scientist, presented a paper that suggested that overwritten data could be recovered through the use of Scanning transmission electron microscopy. In 2001, he presented another paper on a similar topic. Substantial criticism has followed, primarily dealing with the lack of any concrete examples of significant amounts of overwritten data recovery. To guard against this type of data recovery, he and Colin Plumb designed the Gutmann method, which is used by several disk scrubbing software packages.
Although Gutmann's theory may be correct, there's no practical evidence that overwritten data can be recovered. Moreover, there are good reasons to think that it cannot. Any type of data recovery is all the easier if you are one of those people who has made regular backups. There are numerous ways in which you can do this. You can backup to a CD or DVD, to a memory stick, to an FTP site that offers a storage facility, or to an external drive. There are some excellent USB external drives of 500 GB or more that are small enough to fit into the pocket. If you have this sort of backup of your files then data recovery is always made much easier.
