File Recovery
One type of data loss involves a disk-level failure such as a compromised file system, disk partition, or a hard disk failure —in each of which the data cannot be easily read. Depending on the case, solutions involve repairing the file system, partition table or MBR, or hard disk and file recovery techniques ranging from software-based recovery of corrupted data to hardware replacement on a physically damaged disk. These last two typically indicate the permanent failure of the disk, thus file "recovery" means sufficient repair for a one-time recovery of files. Another type of file recovery involves the process of retrieving files that have been deleted from a storage media.
Losing files or data can also occur because of component failure – for example failure of the read-write heads in a hard drive, failure of the drive motor itself or of one or more components on the hard drive’s printed circuit board. In cases such as these file recovery can only be achieved once the component itself has been repaired or replaced. This can only be carried out in a clean room with a rating of ISO-5 or better. A single speck of dust on a hard drive platter can compromise the entire operation of file recovery. This is why it is essential that any opening up of a hard drive has to be carried out in the confines of a clean room by a company such as Data Recovery SA.
